Although it is technically not on the Caribbean Sea, no other American city exudes more of the diverse tropical appeal of the Caribbean. The city is home to a large and vibrant immigrant population that blends snowbird refugees from more northern climes with emigres from all Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as sizable groups from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. From the hot-blooded Art Deco haunts of South Beach to the natural wonders of the UNESCO-inscribed Everglades and the laid-back charms of the Keys, South Florida offers a bounty of appealing attractions that make an extended stay in the region nearly mandatory for those either embarking or disembarking here.

One of the stops along the Panama Canal Zone route, Puerto Caldera on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast isn't your ordinary port of call, positioned as it is within easy day-trip distance of the country's multiple national parks. The town itself is small, but makes for an ideal base from which travelers can venture out to explore the variety of this Central American country's outdoor attractions and activities. These include snapping photos of gushing waterfalls (and swimming at the base of one, if you bring your swimsuit!), sightseeing near active volcanoes, bird-watching in nature reserves and sanctuaries and horseback riding on Pacific beaches . . . and that's just for starters. Visitors to Puerto Caldera and the surrounding region also enjoy shopping for handicrafts that local artists sell at their cooperatives, as well as sampling traditional Tico cuisine, especially gallo pintoa combination of rice and beans eaten at any time of the day or night. Puerto Caldera is the perfect reminder that adventure often awaits just around the bend.

Lovely Samana is an environmental treasure. Untamed, with plenty of coves, bays, mountains, waterfalls and diverse geography zones where nature abounds. The protected natural area known as Los Haitises National Park is home to two endemic mammal species, the Hispaniolan hutia and the Hispaniolan solenodon along with numerous birds including the brown pelican, frigate birds, barn owls, stygian owls and Hispaniolan amazons. Its beaches are famous for body-boarding and wading.

Visit the national park on nearby Diamond Cay, snorkel among swaying sponges and angelfish at Sandy Spit, or pilot your own boat around Sir Francis Drake Waterway. After all that, youll be ready for an evening drink on the beach where you can admire your Windstar ship aglow in the harbor.

You can imagine the reaction of the locals watching from The Bitter End Yacht Club as your ship comes around the corner under full canvas. At the other end of the island lies the curious assembly of house-sized boulders called The Baths, which form huge underground pools and caverns that youre free to explore.
